I love life's little serendipities, I set out looking for something altogether different and then came across this wonderful picture. I feel it is the perfect picture for this assignment.
At first, I thought the contrast was a no brainer, right? After all, it is a black and white photo; but on closer inspection, I can see that the contrast is much sharper in the above portion and softer in her reflection off the floor. However, I think it is that softer reflection that nails the balance in the vertical direction. If it were as sharp as the above portion, let say a mirror reflection, it would be a completely different picture with a completely different meaning.
The balance on the horizontal is very well composed. With her head, a dark spot of contrast, acting as the fulcrum for her level shoulders at extend both arms to the floor meeting the surface with nearly identical hand positions brings great balance to this photo. In regards to psychological and cultural contexts, I believe there is not many things more balanced and poised than a ballerina. Just having her be the subject of the photo gives me a sense of balance. I must admit I have stared at this picture for a while and I can’t figure out how she gets her legs to point in different directions while keeping her shoulder square to the floor.
Hmmm… Harmony. I am finding it a little hard to find the right words to describe, or perhaps to do this photo justice, the harmony found within it. Let me simply say, it does not matter if ones eye sweeps the image from left to right or vice versa. From top to bottom. The image just works. It is pleasing to the eye on many levels.
