Contrast, Balance, Harmony

I love life's little serendipities, I set out looking for something altogether different and then came across this wonderful picture. I feel it is the perfect picture for this assignment.

At first, I thought the contrast was a no brainer, right? After all, it is a black and white photo; but on closer inspection, I can see that the contrast is much sharper in the above portion and softer in her reflection off the floor. However, I think it is that softer reflection that nails the balance in the vertical direction. If it were as sharp as the above portion, let say a mirror reflection, it would be a completely different picture with a completely different meaning.

The balance on the horizontal is very well composed. With her head, a dark spot of contrast, acting as the fulcrum for her level shoulders at extend both arms to the floor meeting the surface with nearly identical hand positions brings great balance to this photo. In regards to psychological and cultural contexts, I believe there is not many things more balanced and poised than a ballerina. Just having her be the subject of the photo gives me a sense of balance. I must admit I have stared at this picture for a while and I can’t figure out how she gets her legs to point in different directions while keeping her shoulder square to the floor.

Hmmm… Harmony. I am finding it a little hard to find the right words to describe, or perhaps to do this photo justice, the harmony found within it. Let me simply say, it does not matter if ones eye sweeps the image from left to right or vice versa. From top to bottom. The image just works. It is pleasing to the eye on many levels.

Stupefying.... Every day I'm stupefied!

Stupefying?!

What does it take to become stupefied? Well, that is quite simple. If one merely opens their eyes and stops to behold the magical world around them, then becoming stupefied is actually quite hard to stop.

I love to sail the ocean blue. As a matter of a fact, I am a certified to captain for very large (100 footers) sailboats. I most admit it is kind of fun driving around a 5 bedroom 3 bath house with 2 really big sail pointing out the top. However, parking can get a little dicey at times. I have choose this picture as my stupefying picture for a couple reason: 1) I painted it, don't laugh, I don't care if you thing it sucks, and have titled it "Waiting For Me," 2) because I wish to retire and live out the rest of my day on a boat in the tropics. So, this image and the thought of it waiting for me, calling to me, beckoning me to come and sit in the shade of the palm tree and have a fruity drink with lots of rum is stupefying to me. Although, it is worth noting too much rum makes me stupid-fying too! Just saying.

Enjoy! thanks for stopping by to read my post.
